Labelling

The Australian Government is proposing a new system to deliver clearer and more consistent country of origin food labels without imposing excessive cost on industry. Consumers have been reporting for some time that they find current labels on food confusing and that they don’t provide the kind of origin information they most want to know. Businesses have also reported that aspects of the labelling framework are confusing and that it is not always clear which label they should use.

A Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) has been released which discusses potential changes to the current framework. The aim in addressing the current issues is to balance the needs of consumers without causing undue cost to business.

We are interested in hearing your thoughts on the RIS to include in a submission to the Government particularly any benefits and costs of potential improvements to the framework.
