The National Retail Association (NRA) has today backed the Federal Government’s announcement that it will review the nation’s Modern Awards in 2020.
NRA CEO Dominique Lamb said that current workplace arrangements are complex, confusing and outdated.
“Retailers across the country welcome today’s announcement from Industrial Relations Minister Christian Porter to review the current award system,” Ms Lamb said.
“The Modern Awards system is far too complex and needs to be simplified to provide greater clarity, particularly to small business.
“As the voice of modern retail, the NRA stands ready, willing and able to work with the Government constructively to streamline the system and develop a set of Modern Awards that reflect the nature of contemporary retail.”
Ms Lamb also said that retailers need to remain focused in ensuring that their payment systems are complying with current laws.
“Although a more simplified set of laws would greatly help, in the meantime all retailers need to ensure that they’re complying with the Modern Awards and are paying their staff correctly,” Ms Lamb said.
“We encourage any retailer who is unsure of their obligations to obtain expert advice from a legal professional who can assist them in navigating the complex nature of Australia’s award system.”
The National Retail Association is Australia’s largest and most diverse retail industry organisation, and has been representing the interests of the retail, fast food and broader service sector for almost 100 years.
