Our Work

Creating vibrant retail precincts through shared intelligence, collaboration and vigilance.

The National Retail Association (NRA) is seeking to bring together retailers, shopping centres, law enforcement, emergency services and government to create safer, more vibrant retail precincts through the Safe Retail Precincts initiative.

The modern world presents new challenges every day and unfortunately, the threat of dangerous or serious events, such as armed attacks or severe weather events, is ever-increasing.

Retail precincts are environments in which large crowds gather and we all have a responsibility to be aware, prepared and vigilant to ensure our retail precincts remain safe, vibrant spaces.

Retail Crime

Did you know that retail crime, such as shoplifting, robbery and vandalism, costs Australian businesses up to $9 billion each year?

Retail crime costs us all. Every single incident erodes profitability for businesses, increases the cost of goods to consumers, endangers frontline staff while also wasting their time, and ultimately reduces the appeal of our retail precincts to customers.

Considering the impact of retail crime, it’s astonishing to know that an estimated less than 20% of retail crimes are reported to the police.

Counter Terrorism

Although active armed offender incidents are very rare in Australia, these types of devastating events can occur and crowded places, such as shopping centres, have been targeted in other events around the world.

Do you know what to do if an active armed offender came into your business with the sole intention of hurting people? Like any emergency, you should have a well-practiced plan for what to do.

The National Retail Association has specific training to help retailers prepare, survive and recover from active armed offender incidents. Contact us at policy@nra.net.au for more information.

Retail Crime Committees

Retail crime is a critical issue for the industry with far-reaching economic, physical and emotional impacts.

The NRA’s Retail Crime committees bring together representatives from Police and Law Enforcement agencies with Loss Prevention specialists from across from many of Australia’s major retailers. Discussions focus on crime trends, organized crime syndicates, and sharing intelligence to improve prevention and prosecution.

The committees meet both nationally and in five state committees to accommodate local law enforcement.
