The National Retail Association (NRA) has commended the Federal Government for announcing a common-sense move to streamline debt dispute processes between the ATO and small businesses.
Under the new system, any business with a turnover below $10 million per year will be able to apply directly to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) in the case of debt dispute with the ATO.
NRA CEO Dominique Lamb said this measure will save small businesses both time and money.
“Allowing small businesses to apply directly to the AAT to pause or modify ATO debt recovery actions is a fantastic initiative and the NRA commends the Federal Government for this move,” Ms Lamb said.
“The court system can cost a significant amount of time and money, which often the small business in question cannot afford. A more streamlined approach is a common-sense move and will enable mum-and-dad small business owners to focus on running a successful operation.
“It remains an anxious time for small businesses and there is still a while to go before the economy returns to its pre-pandemic state. Small businesses are the lifeblood of the Australian economy and will need supportive measures such as this to keep everyday Australians in a job.”
